Indie Spotlight: Local Open Mics Central To A New Wave Of Talent

5 years ago, Haurskii, then known as Supa16, had an enormous amount of talent and ambition as well as a fiercely independent message. He wrote all of his own songs and programmed his own beats, executively  producing his own mixtapes. However, his sound didn't travel as far as it should have because of the lack of creative outlets for local talent in Birmingham.

At present time, Haruskii is now one of many new acts to blossom out of the new Alabama Urban Renaissance. He and others have benefitted from new, weekly open mic series, held most notably at The High Note and The Foreign Exchange. At both of these events, $5 gets you the opportunity to perform any song in front of a more culturally aware and hip crowd.

The Foreign Exchange, located at 433 20th Street South (conveniently next to a Pizza Hut), has an admittedly more Afrocentric and poetry minded vibe. It, also, has $1 shots so if you want to hear good music and have a good time without going leaving broke, this is definitely the place to be.

The High Note, located at 414 Richard Arrington Jr Blvd S, has hit a high note with a lot of younger talent. It, even, hosts a best of the underground show called The Circut which has featured artists such as the aforementioned Haruskii, C1ub:A.M., The Ninjaz, Jacob Duran, The 1987 Supply Crew, Cory Savage, LDLR, Street Scholar and so many more.

These venues and others are breathing new life into Alabama hip-hop culture, as well as giving people plenty to look forward to! Check out the High Note on Thursdays and The Foreign Exchange on Fridays for a chance to witness plenty of fresh, new talent and meet some of the new kids on the block.
